1.Hogwarts Has Over 20 Towers
The Hogwarts Castle boasts 12 main towers and about 12 smaller ones. The tallest is the Astronomy Tower, where astronomy lessons take place—and where Snape killed Dumbledore. One of the most mysterious towers is the Dark Tower, rarely used and located on the seventh floor. Made of solid stone, it even has a prison cell equipped with a stone bench and shackles.
2.The School Was Founded in the 10th Century
Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff founded Hogwarts around 990 AD. Each founder named a school house after themselves, representing the traits they valued most. Disagreements over school policies caused Salazar Slytherin to leave after insisting that only pure-blood students be admitted.
3.Magical Children Are Registered at Birth
When a witch, wizard, or magical child is born, they’re automatically registered to attend Hogwarts. A magical artifact called the Feather of Initiation records their names in the Book of Initiation, kept in a secluded tower untouched by human hands. At age 11, they receive their invitation letter—usually delivered by an owl messenger.
4.The Second Wizarding War Ended at Hogwarts
The Battle of Hogwarts in 1998 marked the end of the Second Wizarding War. Much of the castle was destroyed, but thanks to Hogwarts’ magical properties, the castle healed and restored itself in a short time.

7.Hogwarts’ Motto Is “Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon”
The official motto of Hogwarts is “Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus,” meaning “Never tickle a sleeping dragon.” J.K. Rowling wanted something memorable and fun, unlike traditional school mottos that are often serious and easily forgotten.
8.Hogwarts Has 142 Staircases
The castle is famous for its enchanted staircases, with 142 staircases leading to dungeons, classrooms, dormitories, and more. The Grand Staircase, often featured in the films, connects all seven floors but has a mind of its own. It sometimes tricks students with false steps. Other staircases are equally magical, such as the one leading to the girls’ dormitory, which transforms into a slide if boys try to enter.
